Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly promote Police Officer Ivan Marcano to Detective at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center on Thursday morning.

A courageous cop who was shot breaking up a robbery in the Bronx — but still managed to fatally shoot the gunman — was bumped up to the rank of detective before he was released from the hospital Friday.
Ivan Marcano, 27, was handed his new badge during a cozy ceremony at his bedside at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital with NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Mayor Bloomberg.

“I’m doing much better,” Marcano told our source before he was allowed to go home around 11:30 a.m. “It’s looking good right now. I’m with nurses and family. That’s all I can say right now.”
Marcano’s girlfriend, who was driving him when the shootout erupted, stayed by his side as he left the hospital to a round of applause from friends, family and fellow cops.

Kelly said the newly minted detective was grateful, but still woozy from his pain medication.

“He just did a remarkable job and we wanted to reward it,” Kelly said at City Hall after the promotion.

“It was a nice moment. It was clearly a surprise for him.”
Marcano was off-duty and riding in a car with his girlfriend when they spotted two brutes pistol-whipping a man in front of his Harrison Ave. apartment Wednesday night..
